& High Wycombe Town GuideHigh Wycombe, in South Buckinghamshire, is a large town with a population of nearly 120,000 people. High Wycombe is located close to London and is regarded as the largest town in the county of Buckinghamshire.
Wycombe is built on a market town and industrial basis. The market still survives today and is held on the main High Street. Historically, High Wycombe has a strong industrial heritage that thrived during the 17th century and provided many of the towns current character and layout.
Wycombe also has a popular craft market held in the large Octagon Shopping Centre. The main town centre was significantly redeveloped in the 1960s which saw most of the old buildings demolished and rebuilt. Two main shopping centres were built in addition to many office blocks and car parks.
The county of Buckinghamshire operate a selective education system that consists of students in middle school taking an exam that will establish whether they get accepted for a state grammar or secondary modern school. In addition to these schools there are several exclusive private schools in the area.
The RAF have a base in High Wycombe (RAF Daws Hill) which is occupied by the United States Navy. The town also houses the key campus the the New University of Buckinghamshire. Since 2007 the university has achieved full university status.
Transport links to Wycombe are extensive. There is a local bus that runs to the nearby towns of Chesham, Heathrow, Slough, Aylesbury, Reading and Maidenhead. By rail, there is a local station that operates on the Chiltern Line to London Marylebone.
By road, the M40 motorway is the most popular route and has two junctions that link to High Wycombe. The A404 local road travels south to Maidenhead and, to the eat, the A40 links High Wycome to Stokenchurch.
High Wycombe does not have a large airport (only a small airport at Booker) but it is just 20 miles away from the large Heathrow international airport. Heathrow operate flights domestically and internationally to hundreds of destinations.
