With a population of just over 40,000 people, Durham is a small city in the district of County Durham. Located 13 miles south of Sunderland, Durham is situated on the River Wear that creates a peninsular around the north of the city.
Perhaps the most famous landmark in the city is Durham Cathedral.
This Normal cathedral that can be seen on the skyline from many parts of the city and was formed in 1093.
The cathedral is now a World Heritage Site and is regarded as one of the best examples of Normal cathedrals in Europe.
At the base of the peninsula is the Durham market square. Regular outdoor and indoor markets are still held in this area and the location makes up the main shopping area of the city.
In addition to Durham Cathedral, the city has many other landmarks and amenities. The city has over 630 listed buildings including Crook Hall, Chorister School, Kepier Hospital, Kingsgate Bridge, St John's College and the Town Hall.
Durham University is often believed to be the third oldest university in England (after Cambridge and Oxford) and has currently has over 17,000 students.
The university has the notable accolade of being awarded the prestigious prize of Sunday Times University of the Year in 2005.
Durham's compact city offers many landmarks and facilities including several superb shops and restaurants. A great deal of the shopping are of Durham is pedestrianised and closed off to traffic.
Transport to Durham is mainly by road and rail. The A1 goes through the east of the city and is easily accessible. By rail, the East Coast Main Line from London to Edinburgh travels through Durham over a Victorian viaduct and stops at Durham Railway Station.
The nearest airports to Durham are Durham Tees Valley Airport to the south of the city and Newcastle Airport to the north.
