Derby, in the East Midlands, is a large city with a population of approximately 235,000 people. Derby is situated on the River Derwent and part of the county of Derbyshire.
Historically, Derby played an important part in Britain's industrial revolution at the start of the 18th century. Britain's first ever water powered silk mill was made in Derby.
Many of the city's Victorian parks are still in operation today. Many of the parks (including Derwent Park and Darley Park) are home to a variety of wildlife. The parks also have several pleasant riverside walks.
Derby has several famous buildings and landmarks. The Derby Heritage Centre, now closed, used to show visitors the history of the city from the Roman era up to the modern day. Derby Gaol, which operated between 1756 and 1846, is now a museum with many of the original cells still there.
Cultural visitors to Derby will be interested in the Derby Museum and Art Gallery which houses works by Joseph Wright. The museum also has a fine selection of Royal Crown Derby porcelain and archaeological items.
The Derby Industrial Museum is another popular visitor attraction with information about Derby's technological accomplishments.
Derby also has an excellent range of shops. Many of these are located in Derby's new Westfield shopping centre. The shopping centre cost £340 million pounds to build and, in additional to the shops, has its own 12 screen cinema and food court. Another recently opened centre is the Revive Healthy Living Centre.
Derby's most famous sporting club is Derby County Football Club who play their home match at Pride Park stadium. The team has one a selection of honours during their history including the Football League Championship in 1972 and 1975 and the FA cup in 1946.
Derby is home to several other sporting clubs and teams including Derby County Cricket Club and Derby Rugby Club.
Travel links to Derby are very good because of its central location. The M1 motorway (approximately 10 miles from the city) links Derby with Sheffield, Leeds and London. Several A roads connect Derby to major towns and cities such as Birmingham, Manchester, Bristol, Nottingham and Leicester.
You can also travel to Derby by rail. Derby Midland is the main station with express services to and from London. Other services on the line link to the south west and north east.
The nearest airport to Derby is East Midlands Airport just 15 miles from the city. A number of budget airlines including Ryanair and Easy Jet fly domestic and European flights from this airport.
