Perhaps the most famous landmark in Coventry is Coventry Cathedral. Like much of the city, the Cathedral was bombed during World War II and rebuilt shortly afterwards. Since then, the city has become known as a centre of peace and reconciliation.
Two universities are in the area, the Coventry University and the nearby University of Warwick (on the southern outskirts of the city). The Coventry University has nearly 20,000 students and has an expanding main campus located in the centre of Coventry.
Coventry is famous for the severe bomb damage cause on November 14, 1940 during World War II. The "Coventry Blitz" as it has become to be known was a major German air raid which destroyed much of the historic city. The city (and Cathedral) were rebuilt after the war and a large pedestrianised shopping centre was constructed.
In addition to Coventry Cathedral, the city has several other places of interest. The Coventry Transport Museum has the world's biggest collection of British made motor vehicles. The museum is extremely popular and the visitor numbers have grown even more since the 2004 major refurbishment.
The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum and the Midland Air Museum are other popular places to visit in Coventry. The Warwick Arts Centre (located at the University of Warwick) houses a theatre, art gallery, cinema and even a concert hall. After London's Barbican it is the second biggest arts centre in Britain. Coventry also has several other theatres including the Belgrade Theatre and the College Theatre.
Coventry have many successfully sports teams and clubs. Championship team Coventry City Football Club play their home games at the 32,000 capacity Richoh Arena. Other local teams include Coventry Rugby Club, Coventry Blaze Ice Hockey team, Coventry Bears Rugby League team and the Coventry Bees Speedway team.
Because of its central location, Coventry has superb transport links. By road, the M6, M69, M40 and M45 motorways are all close to the city. Rail links, on the West Coast Main Line, are provided from the Coventry Railway Station. Several bus operators run services in the city.
The nearby Birmingham International Airport (11 miles away) and the local Coventry Airport (5 miles outside the city) fly to over 20 European destinations.
