The City Of London is the reference name for the small city within the area known as Greater London. Along with Westminster the area is known as the historic basis for the city as it stands today. In terms of size and population The City Of London represents just a small area of the whole London metropolitan area.
The City Of London is well known as a foremost centre for finance and business. Despite its relatively small size (approximately one square mile) the City is on the same scale as New York City in terms of its importance to world finance.
The actual population of the City of London is around 10,000 residents but, rather staggeringly, employs nearly 350,000 workers. The small population makes the area known as the City of London the second smallest "city" in the United Kingdom.
Of course, the entire area of London is much, much larger in size and has a population of well over 7 million. Many of these are based in the financial sector of the City. Because of the huge difference in the ratio of residents and workers it means the transport system in to the City can get extremely busy, especially during the peak hours.
The original area for the City Of London was surrounded by a Roman wall. This has long since gone (with a few remaining segments). The remaining sections are visible at St Alphage, near the Tower of London and near the Museum of London. The latter was discovered after a World War II air-raid devastated the area in 1940.
The City Of London has a famous history. On two occasions the City nearly burned to the ground, once in 1212 and then the Great Fire of London in 1666. The fire destroyed over 13,000 houses, 87 parish churches and even St Paul's Cathedral. An estimated 70,000 of the 80,000 inhabitants lost their home.
Because of its strong financial links, it is no surprise the City of London is home to many leading and famous financial buildings including the Bank of England, the London Stock Exchange and Lloyds of London. In the city (and nearby Docklands area) there are now over 500 banks trading internationally.
There are still a fair number of maintained gardens in the City of London area. These range from small churchyards to large formal gardens. Some of the most notable include Finsbury Circus, Jubilee Garden, St Paul's Churchyard and Barber-Surgeon's Hall Garden.
Because of its central location, the transport options in to the City are numerous. It must be noted that the main transport links often get very busy and congested because of the large number of workers moving in to and out of the City.
