Chester Business Guide
& Chester Town Guide
The county town of Chester is located on the River Dee (on the Welsh border) and has a population of over 80,000 people. Chester has several prominent examples of architectural monuments included the Medieval city walls which are now Grade 1 listed. Chester is well known this wall and it is regarded as one of the best preserved medieval walls in the United Kingdom.
Excavations were carried out in Chester on the Grosvernor Park site which produced numerous interesting historical finds. These included the base of a small Roman statue, Civil War musket balls, plaster work from a mansion's ceiling and a Roman votive.
During the Industrial Revolution, Chester played a major part and was at the heart of the canal industry. Two railway stations meant Newton (located in the north east of Chester) were responsible for providing workers and vast wealth production to the area.
Chester is also known for its beautiful surroundings. The northern and eastern area of Chester consists of forest and headland. The west site (towards the Dee Estuary) has marsh and wetlands.
In 2007 Chester began a £1.3 billion 10 year plan to make Chester a "must see European destination". This was nicknamed the Chester Renaissance. The current market hall, theatre, market hall, leisure centre and NCP car park will be demolished and replaced with new homes, retail space, department store, hotel, multi-storey car park, performing arts centre and bus exchange.
Visitors to Chester can explore many cultural amenities in the city. The Grosvernor Museum houses exhibitions from the city's Roman past and a reconstructed Georgian house. There is even a Roman Ghost Tour in Chester in addition to many other family day out destinations.
Chester City F.C. play in Coca-Cola League 2 and play their home games at the Deva Stadium. Chester also has a national basketball team, a wheelchair basketball team, a successful hockey club (Chester HC) and an American Football team.
In addition to Chester's canals, the city also has two major railway stations (located very close to each other). The main station is Chester General and is in the north east of the city centre. Extensive renovation work took place in 2007 which saw the pedestrian access and parking improved.
By road, Chester is a hub for several major roads. These include the M53 (from Liverpool) and the M56 (from Manchester). There are also links to the north Welsh coast via the A55. Buses operate in the city (provided by Arriva and First Group) with plans in place to build a brand new bus exchange in Chester.
