The area was formed in 1997 when two East Sussex districts (Brighton and Hove) merged. Immediately after the merger the new area was granted status as a borough. In 2000 Brighton and Hove was awarded city status as art of a competition to celebrate the Millennium.
Brighton has always been a popular place to visit and sees 8 million tourists visit every year. The area has plenty of hotels, restaurants, entertainment and shops. These additionally serve the business conference industry that thrives in Brighton.
Brighton and Hove has two universities and a modern language school.
The University of Brighton (formally Brighton Polytechnic) has over 20,000 students and the University of Sussex has over 10,000.
Brighton Pier is a popular and well known landmark in Brighton and Hove. It was originally opened in 1866 but closed in 1975 for renovation work. The pier suffered a large fire in February 2003 but luckily the damage was limited and most of the pier was able to open the following day.
Brighton is also famous for its many beaches. The beachfront in Brighton has many bars, night clubs, restaurants and amusement arcades. Most of these are located in between the two main piers.
Because of the amenities and its close location to London (just 1 hour away) Brighton is a popular destination for the London population looking to escape for some fresh air.
Live music makes up a large part of the culture in Brighton. With over 400 pubs and nightclubs in addition to the Brighton Centre and the Brighton Dome there are always plenty of gigs and concerts to see. Most music fans visit between May and September but there is music nearly all year round.
Theatre lovers are also catered for with the recently expanded Komedia and the popular Theatre Royal which is now over 200 years old. There are several smaller theatres in Brighton and Hove (many above pubs) which are also popular.
Every May the Brighton Festival is held in the city. There are many organised processions and outdoor spectaculars which often include theatre, music, visual arts, fireworks and pyrotechnics. Another festival, The Brighton Fringe Festival, runs alongside the main Brighton Festival and is now regarded as the second largest Fringe festival in the world.
Public transport in Brighton is well catered for with a major railway station (with links to London) and a very extensive bus service. There are plenty of taxis, trolley buses, trams, ferries and coach services. The fastest train station from Brighton to London Victoria takes just 51 minutes.
