Historically, Bradford is well known for its dominance of the textile industry. This has now waned but the area still enjoys economic success in other areas such as finance, electronics, retail and manufacturing.
Education in Bradford is dominated by the University of Bradford. The university currently has over 10,000 students and can trace its history back to nearly 150 years ago. Despite being a technological institution with no "true" arts facility the university still covers a wide range of subjects like medical sciences, archaeology and modern languages. The academic research at the university is heavily backed up with teaching a traditional of social inclusion.
Bradford College and the University of Bradford School of Management (rated the third best business school by the Financial Times) are other notable centres of education in the area.
Bradford has undergone several key developments in the last 10 years with other large development schemes either under way or in the planning stage. Some of the completed developments include Centenary Square, Lister Mills Silk Warehouse, Victoria Mill, Leisure Exchange (multiplex cinema, bowling and restaurants), Valley Parade, Abbey Offices and the Bingley Relief Road.
Visitors to Bradford have several cultural and educational visits that have proved very popular. The National Media Museum is the most visited museum outside of London and features 3 cinemas and a huge Imax screen.
In addition to the huge Imax screen at the National Media Museum there are also several other entertainment complexes in Bradford offering multi-screen cinemas. Cineworld (a the Leisure Exchange) and the Odeon on the outskirts of Bradford are two of the largest exmaples.
Salt's Mill is a gallery featuring the world's largest collection of David Hockney art. Bradford's main art gallery is actually hosed inside the stunning Edwardian Cartwright Hall.
The theatre scene in Bradford is thriving with four main theatres showing a variety of performances from students, community shows and touring professionals. The Alhambra (originally built in 1914) was refurbished in 1986 and is one of the most impressive examples on offer.
The previously quiet West End of Bradford has seen the development of several clubs and theme pubs in recent years turning it in to an often crowded and vibrant part of the city. The Alhambra Theatre can also be found in this area of Bradford.
Transport links to Bradford are excellent. Visitors by road can reach Bradford on the M62 motorway. The Leeds And Bradford Railway connects people to London and there are even canal links along the Bradford Canal with plans to redevelop this in the future.
