& Blackpool Town GuideBlackpool is a popular and famous seaside resort town in England. Situated in the county of Lancashire, Blackpool has a population of nearly 150,000 people. Blackpool is on the Irish Sea coast and is renowned for attracting thousands of visitors every year.
Blackpool is neighboured by the towns of Thornton, Lytham St Anne's, Poulton-le Fydle and Fleetwood. Blackpool gained most of its notoriety as a holiday destination during the inter-war years and by the 1930's had over seven million visitors every year. The town managed to avoid significant damage during World War II and continued to flourish as a holiday resort after the war.
Visitors and holiday makers to the town grew and grew (up to over 15 million per year at the peak) but due to the decline in traditional week long holidays coupled with the increase in popularity of package holidays home and abroad so the visitor numbers settle.
Despite the fall in visitor numbers, Blackpool remains the most popular seaside resort in the whole of the United Kingdom. Over 6 million visitors still visit to enjoy the pleasure beach with weekend breaks proving to be particularly popular.
Blackpool is becoming increasingly popular for other industries and events. Political parties regularly hold their conferences in the town and the Winter Gardens often host trade union conferences. Variety shows are still popular in Blackpool especially in the summer season.
Each year Blackpool hosts several festivals and events. The Blackpool Illuminations spread along nearly seven miles of the Blackpool sea front and are popular throughout August to November. Celebrities are always used to turn on the lights with Dale Winton, David Tennant, Geri Halliwell, Chris Evans, Steps, Westlife, Ronan Keating and Gary Barlow recent participants.
Also hosted in Blackpool, the Blackpool Dance Festival hosts a famous yearly dance competition that is recognised internationally. Blackpool has also seen a rapid rise in the amount of stag nights and hen parties being held in the town. Some residents and hotel owners believe their rowdy behaviour is having a detrimental affect on attracting family holidaymakers to the resort.
Blackpool Tower is the most well known and easily recognisable landmark in the town. Opened over 100 years ago, the tower was inspired by the Eiffel Tower in France and measures over 500 feet in height. There are several restaurants and entertainment venues in a leisure venue beneath the actual tower.
Blackpool also has three piers, with the North Pier housing a small shopping centre and even a mini tramway. Central Pier houses a big wheel and several shops while the South Pier has its own mini theme park.
Transport to Blackpool is very extensive. By road, the M55 motorway is the most popular route while the town also has airport links via Blackpool International Airport. The airport operates flights throughout the United Kingdom and Europe.
