& Bath Town GuideBath, in Somerset, is a small city with a population of just over 90,000 people. The city is famous for its historic baths and hot springs that are fed by the only naturally occurring hot springs in Great Britain. The resort was popular among wealthy Elizabethan and Georgian people who believed the waters from the springs offered healing properties.
The city has many exquisite examples of Georgian architecture (with the Royal Crescent being the most notable) which dates back to when wealthy Georgians moved to the area thanks to the popularity of the baths and spas.
Bath is on the River Avon and can be navigated via locks in small boats. In fact, the River Avon connects as far the the River Thames thanks to restoration work over the last years of the 20th century. This has become very popular with narrow boat enthusiasts.
Bath is surrounded by beautiful countryside and is near to the southern tip of the Cotswolds. The city is at the bottom of the Avon Valley which give Bath its steep streets and cause some buildings to appear to climb slopes.
In the 18th century Bath was considered on of the most fashionable places in Great Britain thanks the Bath Theatre Royal, fantastic architecture at Bath Crescent, Lansdown Crescent and Pulteney Bridge.
Today, culture lovers can enjoy one of the five theatres in Bath which attract internationally renowned directors and companies. Similarly, the Bath International Music Festival, the Bath Literature Festival and the Bath Fringe Festival offer modern day entertainment for all ages.
The Victorian Art Gallery in Bath is just one of the many museums in Bath that show fine examples of local and historic art.
Bath also has several well kept public parks including the popular Royal Victoria Park. This park is just a short walk from the city centre and is over 57 acres in size. Royal Victoria Park has a botanical garden, sports facilities (including bowls, lawn tennis and crazy golf) and a large children's play park.
Bath's most best known sporting team is their rugby union team, Bath Rugby and Bath City Football Club who play in the Conference South league. The city also has cricket clubs, a croquet club and an American Football club.
Bath is a very popular tourist location with its cultural history and architecture. Tourists are well catered for with over 80 hotels, 180 bed and breakfasts (many are in original Georgian buildings with fiver star ratings) and two campsites.
The main city has over 100 restaurants and many public houses and bars. Tourists can also enjoy open top bus tours around the city.
Transport to bath is well catered for. Bath Spa Railway Station connects the city to London, Bristol, Cardiff, Swansea, Exeter and Plymouth (in addition to many more smaller stations).
Coach links to Bath are provided by National Express and three full time park and ride schemes operate in the city. Bath does not have an airport but Bristol International Airport is only 18 miles away.
